This year offered up a smorgasbord of celebrity ‘I do’s, with famous faces like Gwyneth Paltrow, Karlie Kloss, Kit Harington and Nick Jonas all tying the knot – as well as, not one but two, royal weddings! So, what wisdom can we gain from their star-studded nuptials? Well, plenty, actually.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Showed us… That you can meet your family’s expectations half way.

Let’s face it, families can be a lot when it comes to their expectations about when, where and how you should get hitched! But Harry and Meghan’s May nuptials were the perfect example of how you can ditch (at least some of) your family traditions to make way from your own. From the moment Meghan walked down the aisle alone to meet Harry, it was clear that theirs wasn’t going to be a standard royal affair. Instead, the pair added their own touches to the Church of England ceremony, inviting Bishop Michael Curry, an Episcopal priest from Chicago to preside over the nuptials, before a gospel choir sang Ben E. King’s ‘Stand by Me’.

Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith

Showed us… That backyard weddings can be the bomb diggity.

From breathtaking mountain tops to stunning chapels, there’s no shortage of spectacular locations to host your ‘I do’s – but sometimes the most special wedding venue can be right in your own backyard. Literally. When Mandy and Taylor tied the knot in November, they chose to celebrate with an intimate sundown wedding at their LA home, joined by just 50 of their closest family and friends. They created a laid-back boho vibe, with rugs on the floor surrounding the altar and feathers in the flower arrangements, and their at-home ceremony was proof positive that you can create that wedding magic anywhere you like.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas

Showed us… That a wedding can be a perfect blend of two cultures.

There’s one word for this wedding: Epic. Indian-born Priyanka and American-born Nick went all out for their three-day wedding extravaganza that perfectly blended their two cultures. Kicking off with a family puja (a traditional Hindu prayer ritual), as well as the pre-wedding Mehendi ceremony and Sangeet, they combined a Christian ceremony, officiated by Nick’s dad, with a Haldi ceremony, which went down at a lavish royal palace in Jodhpur, India. Not sure Priyanka was joking when she said their guests would “need vacations after this wedding”…

Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer

Showed us… That humour can definitely have a place in your big day.

When you get a wedding invite via text with a few days notice, it’s safe to say that the nuptials are going to be super chill. So it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that when Amy and Chris exchanged vows in Malibu just before Valentine’s Day, the love was matched by humour – with Amy admitting they both seized the moment to heckle one another. But the occasion (made complete with a NSFW sex joke on Amy’s part!) stayed true to the comedian and her chef hubby, making it actually, pretty freakin’ perfect.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk

Showed us… That the second time around can be just as sweet.

Gwyneth famously ‘consciously uncoupled’ from her first husband Chris Martin in 2014, and when she took the marital plunge for the second time with Brad in September, it was with plenty of fanfare – and a weekend-long wedding in the Hamptons. She wore a lace Valentino couture gown and veil. They exchanged vows in an intimate and romantic 45-minute ceremony. Guests were treated to a dinner party-style reception, catered by chef Mario Carbone. The whole shebang concluded with ‘a dance party for the ages’.
